Sakurajima Volcano with Lightning

Pictured above, the Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan was caught erupting in early January. Magma bubbles so hot they glow shoot away as liquid rock bursts through the Earth’s surface from below. The above image is particularly notable, however, for the lightning bolts caught near the volcano’s summit. Why lightning occurs even in common thunderstorms remains a topic of research, and the cause of volcanic lightning is even less clear. Surely, lightning bolts help quench areas of opposite but separated electric charges. One hypothesis holds that catapulting magma bubbles or volcanic ash are themselves electrically charged, and by their motion create these separated areas. Other volcanic lightning episodes may be facilitated by charge-inducing collisions in volcanic dust. Lightning is usually occurring somewhere on Earth, typically over 40 times each second.

Berlin’s iconic Tacheles arts centre has been cleared after decades of bureaucratic wrangling over the debt-ridden building.

The massive warehouse in the Mitte district was occupied by artists after the fall of the Berlin Wall and became a major tourist attraction.

But the dilapidated complex has been hampering local redevelopment plans.

HSH Nordbank, currently in charge of the Tacheles, requested the clearance as part of plans to sell the centre.

Liberation Editorial: Debate over Occupy tactics: an invented controversy

Black Bloc Rolling Deep

“The rare use of the Black Bloc tactic in Occupy is not the cause of its problems, nor is it the main challenge. As Hedges admits, the “security and surveillance state” did just fine in repressing entirely nonviolent Occupy encampments from coast to coast.

This is not to say that the movement must now escalate towards violence—in fact, no one is arguing for this. But it shows that with or without Black Bloc tactics, the state will move aggressively to silence those who challenge its rule.”

“In its previous life—which ended last year after 63 years—Lutz Tavern (4639 SE Woodstock Blvd., 774-0353) was known nationally as the bar where hipsters discovered Pabst Blue Ribbon.”

You want fries with that? Along with serving burgers now and BACON, they have added liquor to their offerings…
